That's Why The Zebra is a Rat

NBA referee Tim Donaghy has resigned in shame, following reports from the FBI that he gambled on games, including those he officiated. As part of the caboodle, he also had possible mob ties. And not just the luxurious silk ones.

NBA Commissioner David Stern released a statement on the issue (prior to his first public statement, scheduled for July 24):

"We would like to assure our fans that no amount of effort, time or personnel is being spared to assist in this investigation, to bring to justice an individual who has betrayed the most sacred trust in professional sports, and to take the necessary steps to protect against this ever happening again. We will have more to say at a press conference that will be scheduled for next week."

"Sacred trust"? (The bold was ours.) We thought that a bit much, until we realized that "Tim Donaghy" is an anagram for... "Ah Minty God." Also, perhaps more pertinently, "I Hand Gym To...," and definitely more timely and cross-promotionally, "My Giant D'Oh!"

The only upside if Donaghy really did have mafia connections and winds up talking on the stand: maybe we'll find out what exactly happened in the final episode of "The Sopranos."
